Fundamentals of Academic Reading
TSL014 - Madam Khairunnisa Othman

WHAT I GAINED
FROM THIS CLASS
Though Journal 1 & 2 - This has truly taught me what real journalism is like. When I first started this assignment, I was utterly clueless. Writing it was as If I was walking with blindfolds on, hoping to get to the exit. Thankfully I had an amazing lecturer who always reminds my classmates and I the important details and she was also kind enough to help us review our journal. I finally improved in journal 2 with the help of my intelligent classmates! What I find most difficult is to balance my opinion and factual evidence while making sure that the essay is what I want to truly reflect on instead of just throwing in quotes from articles. This is especially difficult because it has a word limit of 500-600 words. It definitely kills my creativity but in a way teaches me how to remove irrelevant information.
Reading video presentation- Within 15 minutes, my group had to share information about topics of today's issues. This taught me how to elaborate my ideas and pin point the most important messages.
Overall syllabus - I struggle with spotting main ideas when it comes to reading. So all the exercises and exams are difficult to me. Our discussions help me determine the key points to spotting main ideas and it have definitely widened my view on reading. I have spent all my life reading aimlessly and never really gained much from the materials because of this issue, and through this subject, it encouraged me more to think about what I read.
